We promote the use of renewables to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. We have generated 5 percent of the company’s electricity ourselves, thanks to the installation of photovoltaic panels at our headquarters in Madrid. A total of ten Group buildings, including Torre MAPFRE in Barcelona, have a sustainable construction certification — which is testament to our efficient use of energy and resources.

We continue to make progress in our commitment to energy efficiency as a key element of our sustainability strategy and to meet important challenges, like becoming a carbon neutral company by 2030.

To this end, we are promoting the use of renewable energy by purchasing our energy from 100 percent renewable sources, installing photovoltaic panels on several buildings, completely refurbishing our facilities, and replacing the air conditioning equipment in line with energy-efficiency criteria.

We have also carried out campaigns to adapt the temperature control needed for comfort within buildings, such as Warm Biz in Spain (for energy savings in winter) and Cool Biz in Mexico and Argentina (for energy savings in summer). We have also extended our ISO 50001 Energy Management System certification to a total of 22 buildings in Spain. This is an integrated management system that promotes efficient use of water, energy and raw materials.

These measures, together with the adaptation of our business to the pandemic situation, have contributed to a total reduction of 26,467,293 kWh—representing 18 percent of total energy consumption in 2020—and prevented 4,550 metric tons of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

Green buildings

We currently own ten properties that have received LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, including Torre MAPFRE in Barcelona. This certification confirms that these spaces have been built and designed to reduce their environmental footprint, by conserving energy, including by making efficient use of water, reducing CO2 emissions, creating an improved indoor environment and minimizing the use of natural resources, among other measures. In addition, 30 of our sites across the globe are certified under the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.

Circular Economy

We have recently joined the Pact for a Circular Economy, an initiative that sets out nine commitments to promote energy saving across the company, to reduce our environmental impact, to promote products and services that meet environmental criteria and that help to reduce our carbon footprint, and to involve society by promoting a model of responsible consumption and high-quality recycling, among other measures.
