SEGURIDAD Y MEDIO AMBIENTE is a quarterly publication specialising in accident prevention and the environment.

The review accepts for publication original, unpublished research work in Spanish and English dealing with the prevention of occupational risks, fire protection, civil protection, road safety, natural risks, the conservation and saving of natural resources, sustainable development and the climate change.

All originals will be vetted by the Editorial Board and then either accepted as they are, turned down or accepted conditionally upon Board-proposed revisions. Unaccepted originals will be returned to the sender’s address.

The articles published in SEGURIDAD Y MEDIO AMBIENTE will also be published in electronic format on FUNDACIÓN MAPFRE’s website as well as in any other formats that may arise in the future, the authors thereof hereby accepting these and other formats of virtual or digital publication.

The author will be sent a set of first proofs to read and correct; revision of the second proofs will be left up to the discretion of the Editorial Board. Additions during the proofreading stage can be made only in exceptional circumstances on duly justified grounds. In the case of articles written by several authors, enclosure shall be made of the name, postal address, email address and telephone number of the author liaising between the review and the other authors.

Structure and Contents

The articles sent in will run to at least 15 and at most 25 DIN-A4 pages written double-spaced on a single side in Arial 12-point font; they will be numbered correlatively. They will be sent in Word format (preferably .rtf or .doc) and shall abide by the following structure:

  • Article title, including avant titre and subtitle as need be.
  • Surname and initial of the authors, their academic and professional qualifications and the liaison-author’s contact details (postal address, telephone number, fax and email).
  • Lead or brief article abstract.

  • General text comprising the following sections:
    • introduction,
    • development of the article with its corresponding sections
    • conclusions
  • Complementary texts: in the interests of producing the most eyecatching and easily readable article layout we recommend that complementary texts be sent in as well, inputting additional information without actually being a summary thereof.
  • Images: images or figures shall be in colour and the best possible quality, with a 300 ppp resolution and optimum reproduction size. They will be sent in tif, jpg or pdf format. Images shall be numbered by Arabic digits in order of appearance in the text and accompanied by a caption giving clarificatory information thereon. In the article text a cross reference to the corresponding image or figure will also be given with the abbreviation (Fig. x). Its source will be quoted, as laid down under the “Bibliography” section below.
  • Copyright: Authorisation as need be will be furnished for reproduction of already published material or the use of illustrations or photographs.
  • Tables: As with the images, tables shall be accompanied by a title and, as necessary, their information source, which will be quoted as laid down in the “Bibliography” section below. They will be numbered correlatively with Arabic digits and in the order of their appearance in the text. They shall be furnished in Word or Excel format (preferably .rtf, .doc or .xls) in separate pages from the text itself, including a page for each table.
  • Summaries or quoted passages from the text: 6 paragraphs will be taken from the text to highlight the salient points of the article. These quoted paragraphs will have a maximum of 30 words each.
  • Summary. A 4-to-6 DIN-A4 page, double-spaced, single-sided summary of the article will also be enclosed, to be used for translation into English and incorporated into the texts to be sent to non-Spanish-speaking countries.
  • Bibliography: A list shall be enclosed of the quoted texts cited by the authors. Quotes shall be cross-referenced to this bibliography in the text, numbered consecutively by order of appearance therein. They will be identified by super-indexed Arab numbers in brackets. Repeated quotes within the text will be identified with the corresponding number. Articles accepted for publication but not yet actually published will be quoted as “forthcoming”. The reference format will be:
