Twenty five years ago a group of
MAPFRE executives led by
Ignacio Hernando de Larramendi
thought that the difficult task of
company management could well do with the
aid of a publication dealing with the
discipline known as risk management, as yet
little developed in the English-speaking
world and even less so in Spanish-speaking
countries.
At about that time risk management was beginning to carve itself a niche in the Spanish business world, especially in MAPFRE.That trailblazing group, who decided to embrace wholeheartedly the riskmanagement concept, received the inestimable collaboration of two key people in this start-up phase: David Shpilberg, then president of Venezuela’s Sinérgica S.R.L., who headed the editorial team, and Felix Kloman, president of Connecticut’s Risk Planning Group as expert in the matter. Two years later, in 1985, Filomeno Mira Candel took over the reins, becoming the publication’s longest serving editor and the real driving force behind it throughout this time.
In those days the review was stencil typed on the old warhorse Olympia typewriters, a small number of issues then being run off by a quick printing process. Today we can proudly boast that the review comes out in 27 countries, with a summarised version in English and a Portuguese version published in Brazil. As well as the hard copy there is also an online version.
Since then many people have made their
own particular inputs, some essential, all
highly valuable, to this 25-year commitment
to risk management enlightenment. To all of
them we owe our deepest gratitude, our
readers above all.
FUNDACIÓN MAPFRE will continue
in its endeavour to make this publication an
international benchmark in the field of risk
management and insurance, trying to build
bridges between the business and university
worlds, striking the right balance between
content of a scientific and practical character.
We now look to the future with undiminished vim, keen to take on new projects and achieve new goals.
