25 years together: A worthy cause for celebration

Foto detalle 1 Filomeno Mira CandelA quarter of a century has passed since the first issue of the review Gerencia de Riesgos y Seguros came out. Some say that age in itself has no merit: it’s just a question of hanging around and letting the number’s tick over. But 25 is a number we can justly be proud of. In today’s world, with information cycles measured in fractions of a second, 25 years might seem to date back to prehistoric times, but this is not so. In fact our current circumstances stem from editorial boards that bent over backwards to offer opinions and come up with answers, encapsulated in the written word, for a disparate, scattered public all sharing the same keenness to understand and interpret risk management, present and future.

Neither those who forged this review nor those who keep it going today wished to make these pages a notice board or loudspeaker to voice their own vested interests, tempting though this facile option might be. Quite on the contrary the review was born with the idea of building bridges and establishing channels between risk management professionals, wherever they might be in their profession or in the world.

This special edition aims to be first and foremost a homage to our readers, a complex universe of hundreds of faithful readers, some throughout our whole 25 year history. Many more have been brought into the fold as we grew, others fell by the wayside, sometimes to return later. Our thanks go to all of them, for without their support we would not be celebrating this number 100.

We have tried to offer an overview of these twenty five years, in which we have witnessed several revolutions that no one quite expected. Thus, after the letter from José Manuel Martínez, President of MAPFRE and of FUNDACIÓN MAPFRE, which kicks off this special anniversary report, we have taken stock of this dizzyingly changeful scene with some of the leading figures of prestigious institutions and associations: Miguel Ángel Macías (President of AGERS), John Hurrell (CEO of AIRMIC), Jorge Luzzi (President of ALARYS), Bruno Porro (CRO Network of Geneva Association). This special edition then winds up with the notes of the person who preceded me in the editorship of this review: Francisco Martínez.

The first of the three studies published deals with the new paradigms in risk management, occupational hygiene and safety and the environment, with the formulation of a groundbreaking doctrine (NUPAR – TAR).The second study is based on the inaugural lecture of the academic year 2007-2008 of the Insurance, Juridical and Enterprise Faculty of Salamanca’s Universidad Pontificia and deals with the strategic challenges in the insurance world. The third paper addresses the importance of predictive statistical models in credit insurance in the current economic downturn.

This issue of the review, as you will have seen from its special design and some of its contents, aims to commemorate the twenty fifth anniversary of its birth. This celebration would not be complete without giving our heartfelt thanks to two groups of people. First and foremost our readers, thanking them for their loyalty in the past and trusting that it will continue in the future.Without their support Gerencia de Riesgos y Seguros would never have become what it is today. Secondly our thanks go to the whole human team of the review: to those who kick-started it, to those who joined their forces to the ongoing endeavor thereafter and those who will take up the torch in the future. To all of them our thanks, together with our hopes that they will continue to make this thrilling endeavour possible day after day.
